History of White Bear Lake, Minnesota
The early inhabitants of White Bear came to the area around 1858, the same year Minnesota became a state. They settled in an area of about thirty eight square miles. What attracted these European settlers to settle there was the abundance of game, beautiful lakes and fertile soil for them to plant and farm. The beauty of the surroundings spread far and wide and eventually created a tourist economy. People would ride steamboats all the way from the Mississippi River or via train in order to spend their vacations at White Bear Lake. The tourist economy led to the development of many hotels, resorts, hostels, restaurants and shops around the city. At the turn of the century, the resort boom faded and was replaced by lumber and farming as the main sources of income for residents. In 1924 the township finally incorporated and development continued to grow. During the 1970s and 1980s, the city was able to acquire new territory through the purchase of land. Today, White Bear Lake is a bustling city of twenty four thousand people.
