The community around the Forest Lake area came to be because of the initial construction of the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad which was completed in 1869. The development of summer properties on the shores of the area’s lakes fueled further growth of the city and a commercial district developed along with community facilities like schools and parks. The lake home community eventually blossomed into a full-pledged city when residents turned their properties from vacation homes to year-round homes. From the 1970s all the way to the 1990s the city experienced exponential growth. In 2001, the city and township was combined into one city.
